Icicle Works was a British band that scored a hit song in the US with the quirky and mysterious title Whisper to a Scream (Birds Fly). The jangling guitars and martial drumming echoes the similar sound of early REM. Although the single was the closest the band ever got to success in the US, they put out a string of albums that did well in the UK.

Where are they now?

Following the release of an ill-received album Blind in 1988, the band began to go through a series of personnel changes. Drummer Chris Sharrock left to join a band that sounds eerily similar, The Lightning Seeds, who was replaced by Ringo Starr’s son Zak Starkey. The band eventually broke up for good in in the early 90’s, but their one hit single remains a staple of 80’s compilation albums.

Icicle Works was reunited by Ian McNabb in 2006 for a series of 6 concerts. Due to postive audience response, they continue to perform, most recently playing in Liverpool in 2008. Original drummer Chris Sharrock was invited to play with the revived group, but declined.
